The most famous of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill’s collaborations, this work is a highlight of 20th-century musical theatre. It’s also the one selected by Soulpepper for its inaugural stab at the genre. An instant hit after its Berlin premiere in 1928, the “opera for beggars” traces the misdeeds of womanizing criminal “Mack the Knife” Macheath through Brecht’s razor-sharp story and Weill’s gripping score. Albert Schultz tackles the lead role, while Patricia O’Callaghan embodies his beloved, Polly. —Stéphanie Verge
