The fest kicks things off with As You Like It, Shakespeare’s winsome tale of cross-dressing, crossed messages and star-crossed lovers. Andrea Runge takes centre stage as the bright, bold Rosalind. June 7 to Oct. 31; previews from April 30. Festival Theatre. How do you jazz up the already spicy Taming of the Shrew? Toss in a gambling debt, some gangsters and a whack of Cole Porter and you’ve got Kiss Me, Kate. Juan Chioran, Monique Lund, Mike Jackson and Chilina Kennedy star. June 8 to Oct. 30; previews from April 10. Festival. The charismatic Kennedy—who dazzled as Maria in last year’s West Side Story—ditches the mean streets of New York for Buenos Aires’ presidential palace in Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Evita. June 10 to Oct. 30; previews from May 28. Avon Theatre. Éminence grise Christopher Plummer storms his way through The Tempest as Prospero, in the company of Trish Lindström (Miranda) and Dion Johnstone (Caliban). Des McAnuff directs. June 25 to Sept. 12; previews from June 11. Festival. Age-dodgers Michael Therriault (Peter) and Sara Topham (Wendy) take flight for Neverland in J. M. Barrie’s kids’ classic, Peter Pan. Tom McCamus and Seán Cullen chew scenery as the dastardly scene-stealers Captain Hook and Smee. June 12 to Oct. 31; previews from April 16. Avon. It could be argued that a play containing the glorious stage direction “Exit, pursued by a bear” need not go any further, but the schizophrenic mix of comedy and tragedy that marks A Winter’s Tale—the story of a jealous king who destroys his family only to get an unexpected stab at happiness years later—proves otherwise. June 9 to Sept. 25; previews from May 27. Tom Patterson Theatre. Broadway director and Toronto native Stafford Arima turns his hand to Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris, the all-American musical revue dedicated to the songs of Belgium’s famous troubadour. Brent Carver stars. June 11 to Sept. 25; previews from May 14. Tom Patterson. Another European legend grabs the spotlight in Do Not Go Gentle, a tribute to the tumultuous life of Welsh poet Dylan Thomas (Geraint Wyn Davies). July 13 to Sept. 11; previews from July 2. Studio Theatre.—Stéphanie Verge
