The Greek myth of Orpheus—the poet whose love for his dead wife opened the gates of hell—gets a 1950s southern gothic spin, courtesy of Tennessee Williams. A guitar-strumming ladies’ man, Valentine Xavier (Jonathan Goad), drifts into town and acquires a job at the dry goods store run by middle-aged Italian storekeeper Lady Torrance (the magnificent Seana McKenna). Saddled with a tragic past and trapped in a loveless marriage with a dying bully, the lady—all fire, fury and despair—is inextricably drawn to her new employee. Miles Potter directs.
