If We Were Birds

Erin Shields’s wrenching take on the Ovid story “Tereus, Procne and Philomela” was one of the standouts at the 2008 edition of Summerworks. Tarragon smartly picked it up, ensuring that a larger audience will bear witness to the tale of a violent war hero who deeply wrongs two sisters, setting in motion a cycle of misery. A chorus of raped women (representing 20th-century Rwanda, Bosnia, Bangladesh, Berlin and Nanking) hammers home the modern-day relevance of it all.—Stéphanie Verge
