In Good King Charles’s Golden Days

Another seemingly incongruous meeting forms the centrepiece of George Bernard Shaw’s Restoration comedy In Good King Charles’s Golden Days. Eager for some stimulating company, scientist Isaac Newton (Graeme Somerville) invites painter Godfrey Kneller (Ken James Stewart), Quaker founder George Fox (Ric Reid) and King Charles II (Benedict Campbell) over for an in-depth confab. The much-anticipated tête-à-tête goes off the rails, however, when the sovereign’s spirited mistresses show up. Eda Holmes directs. Previews from April 17.Stéphanie Verge
