The Flying Dutchman

Johannes Debus makes his mainstage debut as music director in this Canadian Opera Company revival of Richard Wagner’s haunting drama. Christopher Alden returns to stage the production, which he first mounted in 1996. Making his COC debut in the title role is Russian bass-baritone Evgeny Nikitin; bass Mats Almgren appears as Daland, a sea captain who gives the Dutchman his daughter’s hand in marriage. The part of the daughter, Senta, is performed by soprano Julie Makerov; tenor Robert Künzli tackles Erik, the huntsman who yearns for Senta.—Rick MacMillan
