While filming the perfect tempest that was his acclaimed 1996 work Breaking the Waves, Lars von Trier banded together with some of his avant-garde buds to form Dogme 95, a movement dedicated to cinematic simplicity. Dogme’s first outing, the no-frills Festen (released in North America as The Celebration), won the Jury Prize at Cannes in 1998. Local group the Company Theatre (A Whistle in the Dark, Marion Bridge) has chosen that film’s stage adaptation as its third production, the story of a hotelier (Eric Peterson) who gathers together his troubled spawn on the occasion of his 60th birthday. Jason Byrne also directs Allan Hawco, Philip Riccio and Tara Rosling. Previews from Nov. 17.—Stéphanie Verge
