The Cherry Orchard

Two Irishmen (writer Tom Murphy and director Jason Byrne) take on a Russian great with their naturalistic version of The Cherry Orchard. Pervasive paralysis serves as the basis for yet another Chekhov classic: this time it’s a once-wealthy family trying to save (or talking a whole lot about trying to save) their beloved estate and its much admired fruit trees. Laurie Paton stars as the clan’s impractical matriarch, Lyubov Ranyevskaya; Jim Mezon as her bordering on ridiculous brother; and Benedict Campbell as the former peasant who has the power to save them all.
