No one does the cautionary tale quite like the Germans. And only a select few do eccentric artistry like the American greats—musician Tom Waits, theatre director Robert Wilson and writer William S. Burroughs—who collaborated on this Gothic opera based on German folklore. Kevin Corey plays an awkward clerk who wants to marry his dream girl but must first master hunting, in accordance with her father’s wishes. Deliverance comes in the form of the ominously named stranger Peg Leg (Michael Scholar Jr.), who offers up magic bullets and a cryptic message: “Six are yours and hit the mark; one is mine and hits the dark.” Previews from Oct. 8.—Stéphanie Verge
