Virgin Festival

  • Toronto Island Park
Now in its third year, this two-day event on Olympic Island has survived some glitches—such as a notoriously truncated set by the Flaming Lips in 2006—to establish itself as a one-stop bazaar for modern-rock fans. This year’s lineup is both impressive and patriotic, with major-league alt-rockers sharing the stage with homegrown favourites. On Saturday, headliners Bloc Party and the Foo Fighters get worthy support from Toronto’s Constantines and Halifax’s Wintersleep. On Sunday, the British triumvirate of Oasis, Paul Weller and Stereophonics is preceded by Winnipeg’s The Weakerthans and local power trio Danko Jones. Many more acts fill out the weekend-long bill—let’s just hope they all stay on the right side of the dreaded island noise curfew.—Jason Anderson
