Canadian Music Week 2007 kicks off with a rather incongruous but nonetheless impressive roster of artists at the Independent Music Awards. Known colloquially as the Indies, the awards show offers something for every hipster. If you want some alternately sleek and ramshackle indie-rock from Montreal, try The Stills. If you’d rather get your ass rocked off by some hairy troglodytes, maximum velocity will be reached by Australian power trio Wolfmother and Montreal upstarts Priestess. Maybe some off-kilter electro-fied hip hop from the Prairies is more your bag—if so, Cadence Weapon is close at hand. Finally, for music fans of a certain vintage, there’s a rare reunion performance by Rough Trade, the decadent hitmaker that emerged from Toronto’s gay scene in the mid-’70s and made an icon out of singer Carole Pope. If none of the above appeals, you clearly need to broaden your horizons.—Jason Anderson
