Taking a break from their gig as the house band on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, Philly’s celebrated live hip-hop crew brings some funky freshness to the Toronto Jazz Festival. And though the Roots remain one of the most stylistically adventurous groups on the scene, they rarely lose their sense of direction thanks to the sure-handed guidance of drummer Questlove.—Jason Anderson
