A newly formed and highly unusual DJ crew pulls out all the stops to impress what’s likely to be College Street’s most fashionable New Year’s crowd. Founded by Alvaro Castellanos—better known to dancers as Alvaro C—Quadrasonic bills itself as “a way of transforming the art of deejaying.” That means four DJs simultaneously working eight turntables, an idea that transforms turntable wizardry into something more like a tag-team wrestling match. Though soulful house music is the lingua franca of the men at the decks, the sets incorporate everything from salsa to funk to old-school disco. As if that weren’t enough action, the DJs are augmented by the Quadrasonic Orchestra, a live band of players led by Alvaro and his brother Boris. Ulysses, another Castellanos brother, adds a further visual dimension with his film installations. The cover includes party favours, hors d’oeuvres, champagne at midnight and, for those who buy two or more tickets on-line, a copy of Quadrasonic’s debut disc, Mass Distraction (2006). But with a show as action-packed as this one, who would require any further distraction?—Jason Anderson
