OUMOU SANGARÉ

One of the summer’s liveliest weekends of music, Afrofest should be especially animated this year thanks to the joyful presence of Oumou Sangaré. The Malian superstar has brought wider attention to the musical traditions of Wassoulou, a historic region located south of the Niger River where women do most of the singing. Sangaré is forthright about defending women’s rights in her songs, a stance that won her the UNESCO prize in 2001.—Jason Anderson
