Don’t let all the unfamiliar, cryptic-looking names scare you off—Eye Weekly’s Canadian Music Week showcase has a solid reputation for presenting breaking talent. Past bills have featured Metric, The Stills, Death From Above 1979 and The Dears. A folk-pop collective founded by the sister team of Casey and Jenn Mecija, Ohbijou recently made the magazine’s cover due to the beguiling charms of its debut disc, Swift Feet for Troubling Times (2006). A recent addition to the cool (but not actually Canadian) indie label Secretly Canadian, Frida Hyvönen is a Swedish vocalist and pianist whose enchanting, idiosyncratic songs make her stylistic kin to Joanna Newsom. Also from Scandinavia, Under Byen is a Danish band with a rich, spacey sound that approximates what Sigur Rós would sound like if it enlisted Björk as its singer. Save your wild carousing for other CMW nights—this is a remarkable opportunity to dive into dreamy soundscapes.—Jason Anderson
