My Bloody Valentine

My Bloody Valentine somehow became the most mythologized rock act of the 1990s by doing very little indeed. After releasing the fuzzed-out masterpiece Loveless in ’91, the British band signed to Island Records, built its own studio and got down to work recording a follow-up. Yet all that the ensuing years produced was gossip that front man Kevin Shields had pulled a Brian Wilson, scrapping albums’ worth of material in his quest for the perfect sound. Though he eventually surfaced as a sideman for Primal Scream and J Mascis—he also provided a few tantalizing songs for the score of Sofia Coppola’s film Lost in Translation—there’s still no new MBV album. Nevertheless, the rumour mill has been reactivated once more now that Shields and Co. are bruising eardrums for the first time in more than 15 years.—Jason Anderson
