Mercury Rev has created some of the most cosmic American music of the past two decades, an impressive achievement for a bunch of miscreants from Buffalo, N.Y. And while they filled early albums like Yerself Is Steam (1991) with brain-busting noise, the band is now capable of making exquisitely pretty music, too. Case in point: new album Snowflake Midnight (2008) sounds like the orchestral score for a vintage Disney movie that’s been refried and psychedelicized.—Jason Anderson
