Mark Knopfler

Dire Straits would likely still be one of today’s top-grossing arena fillers had its leader stayed the course. Instead, Knopfler—still much revered for his skills as a guitarist—has moved away from the slick, bluesy pop-rock of his former band. These days, he prefers the mellower folk, country and Celtic stylings of recent discs like 2006’s All the Road Running (a collaboration with Emmylou Harris) and last year’s Get Lucky.—Jason Anderson
