Few contemporary pop-smiths can match the wit and dexterity of Stephin Merritt. Who else could have created 69 Love Songs (1999), a triple album with a self-explanatory title and nary a clunker? Though the singer and songwriter has released music under various monikers, his Magnetic Fields project remains the best known and best loved. He and his revolving cast of bandmates return for a show in support of Realism (2010), a new album of folk-influenced charmers.—Jason Anderson
