This too-cool duo’s minimalist rock groove now has some serious heat thanks to a hip-hop overhaul. The Kills’ third album since being founded in 2000 by American singer VV and British guitarist Hotel (a.k.a. Alison Mosshart and Jamie Hince), Midnight Boom (2008) was co-produced by Armani XXXchange, cohort to raunchy rapper Spank Rock. The bigger, beatier sound should finally help The Kills escape persistent comparisons to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Normally laconic, VV and Hotel almost sound like they’re having fun on tracks like “Getting Down” and on the downright funky “Sour Cherry.” The change in mood and tempo does them good.—Jason Anderson
