This group deserves to be more than a footnote in the history of Canadian music. The band’s members—initially recruited from Toronto’s coffee house scene by Bernie Finkelstein, who went on to manage Bruce Cockburn and found True North Records— created a sophisticated blend of folk, pop and psychedelic rock at a time when the national music industry was best described as embryonic. Alas, Kensington Market’s legacy was scuppered by its short lifespan (1967–1969) and the long-time unavailability of its albums Avenue Road and Aardvark, both of which were finally reissued last year. Two of the surviving players, Keith McKie and Luke Gibson, reunited in 2008 to take a nostalgic stroll through the Market once again, much to the delight of those who remember the songs first-hand, as well as younger listeners surprised to discover Toronto was so hip.—Jason Anderson
