Last spring saw the release of the Ottawa singer-songwriter’s best album yet, Asking for Flowers (2008). Nominated for last year’s Polaris Music Prize, Edwards’ third disc is a stirring showcase for her winsome voice and finely wrought lyrics. Her words don’t lose their literary bearing, even when the subject matter is Marty McSorley: the hockey goon gets a tribute of sorts in “I Make the Dough, You Get the Glory,” a droll commentary on unequal relationships, similar to the kind McSorley had with teammate Wayne Gretzky. “I’m a Ford Tempo, you’re a Maserati,” she sings, though she needn’t be so hard on herself.—Jason Anderson
