Johnny Winter and Savoy Brown

Having started his career in the ’60s, Texan guitar master Johnny Winter is now in his fifth decade of service to the blues, declaring his allegiance in the name of his 2004 album I’m a Bluesman. He’s not interested in playing any of the songs that keep him in rotation on classic-rock radio stations: such early-’70s hits as “Rock ’n’ Roll Hoochie Koo” and his rendition of Lazy Lester’s “Sugar Coated Love” suggest that what this white-haired guitar ace has lost in speed over the years is made up for with ability. Also hanging in there is Savoy Brown, one of the last big exports of the British R&B boom of the ’60s. Guitarist Kim Simmonds, the sole original member, continues to testify to Blighty’s love of the blues.—Jason Anderson
