Joel Kroeker at CMW

This Winnipeg-bred, Vancouver-based singer-songwriter’s wanderlust is easy to hear on his recently released second disc. Says Joel Kroeker of Closer to the Flame (2007): “I wrote this album on a 100,000-mile journey that began over 15 years ago.” Actually, that journey began even earlier if you count the subject of “At the Drive In,” a sweetly atmospheric vignette inspired by a moonlit night in 1978, when Kroeker’s dad took him to a drive-in to see Star Wars. The origins of “These Quiet Streets” date back to 1997, when Kroeker was in Bethlehem and witnessed an elderly woman trying to reassure a child while a confrontation took place nearby. The song’s celebration of compassion—“If you could feel your own fire burning,” he sings, “we’d all have so much less to fear”—suits the album’s mostly mellow mood. Kroeker’s strident, earnest style as a singer and delicate touch as a guitarist variously recall the music of Jeff Buckley, Ron Sexsmith and Bruce Cockburn. Fans of any of those artists should make sure to catch this CMW whistle stop—after all, Kroeker won’t stay put for long.—Jason Anderson
