Joan Baez’s dedication to music and social activism has rarely flagged since her ’60s heyday as the queen of the folkies and paramour to Bob Dylan. She’s been attracting further kudos these days thanks to her creative partnership with fellow rabble-rouser Steve Earle: on her new album, Day After Tomorrow (2008)—recorded last winter in Nashville—she celebrates her 50th anniversary as a recording artist by applying her still-gilded soprano to a well-curated set of tunes by such writers as Tom Waits, Elvis Costello and Earle himself. All while continuing to campaign for environmental causes, human rights and the lofty but noble goal of peace in our time.—Jason Anderson
