Chronically underappreciated, this Georgian singer-songwriter has nevertheless built up an ardent cult following for his highly idiosyncratic take on traditional American sounds. Jim White was even the subject of a 2003 BBC4 documentary, titled Searching for the Wrong-Eyed Jesus, a sort of guided tour of the American South that’s so vividly captured in his haunting songs. The literary quality of his strange tales align him with such writers as Flannery O’Connor and Harry Crews as much as with any other musical heroes. With its songs populated by God-fearing folks, hillbillies and drug dealers, Transnormal Skiperoo (2008) offers a rich and heady listening experience. White’s musical mix of country, folk and funky R&B is equally evocative of the strange goings-on out on the bayou.—Jason Anderson
