The ’70s wouldn’t have seemed half as smooth if not for the mellow music of this ever-sensitive troubadour. It’s true: hipsters would never have consumed as much Cuervo Gold and Quaaludes without James Taylor’s tunes spinning on their turntables. But unlike many of that decade’s stars, Taylor didn’t stay trapped there, largely because he made the sensible decision to stay on the road rather than spend his days lounging in some mansion. By touring pretty much continually since his heyday, he’s retained a faithful and supportive audience. While his successful 2007 One Man Band live disc and DVD presented him in a solo format, he’s joined on his current tour by his “Band of Legends,” a group of seasoned musicians that includes guitarist Michael Landau, drummer Steve Gadd and bassist Jimmy Johnson. Taylor and his players will do their utmost to rock you gently.—Jason Anderson
