Evanescence

Evanscence learned the hard way that success can pose just as many problems as the quest for it. In the three years since the Arkansas-bred rock band hit it big with Fallen (2003), one of the decade’s best-selling debuts, Evanescence weathered the departure of its co-founder and guitarist Ben Moody, a stroke suffered by his replacement, several more lineup changes and an ugly lawsuit with a former manager. Nevertheless, The Open Door (2006) solidifies singer-pianist Amy Lee’s status as America’s new princess of pain—her melodramatic vocal style and angst-ridden lyrics add further drama to the band’s histrionic but effective blend of goth-rock and grunge. —Jason Anderson
