Seeing as how it’s located on a lake, Toronto never had much use for riverboats. Yet the Riverboat was the name of the most fabled coffee house club in the Yorkville folk scene in the late ’60s and early ’70s—Bruce Cockburn, Gordon Lightfoot and Joni Mitchell all cut their teeth there. As part of the Toronto City Roots Festival, Hugh’s Room hosts a special tribute night, in which local performers play songs by these artists, as well as others who travelled through the Riverboat during its heyday. Also taking this time machine will be singer-guitarist Danny Marks (performing music by Tim Hardin), vocalist Mia Sheard (who covers Joni Mitchell) and singer-songwriter Bobby Cameron (playing Neil Young). After the show, you might feel inspired to check out the latest Yorkville establishment to occupy the site of the Riverboat, which closed in 1978. Alas, the Hazelton Hotel will never have the same mystique, nor such an interesting clientele.—Jason Anderson
