The Québécois music man provided his fans with an unusually candid look into his creative process in the recent documentary Here Is What Is (2007), which accompanied his 2007 disc of the same name. A fascinating look at Lanois in the studio with such collaborators as drummer Brian Blade and The Band’s Garth Hudson, the film shines a light on the peculiar alchemy of transforming ideas and instincts into fully fledged songs. And what songs they are: Lanois’ atmospheric blend of folk, rock, country and jazz has a musky allure.—Jason Anderson
