There’s never been a better time to sell off your prized collection of vintage ’80s synthesizers. An ultra-stylish and unabashedly retrogressive band from Melbourne, Australia, Cut Copy would be eager to take it off your hands. The music on In Ghost Colours (2008) suggests singer-keyboardist Dan Whitford has spent many hours studying the early works of New Order, Depeche Mode and other heroes of synth-pop’s first wave. Hipsters of all ages are taking to Cut Copy’s skilful and seductive reproductions. As for tourmates Black Kids—a fivesome of dance-loving indie kids from Jacksonville, Florida, who’ve been on Blender and Rolling Stone’s lists of hot new acts—they, too, might be interested in checking out your old gear. Judging by the exuberant pop on their debut EP, Wizard of Ahhhs (2007), they sound as if they’d much rather be The Jets than The Strokes.—Jason Anderson
