Whether touring with their pals in Wilco and Iron & Wine or playing on their own, this Tucson band is a consistently big draw in Toronto. That’s due to their lively mix of American roots music and vibrant sounds from south of the border, fashioned by the band’s core members Joey Burns and John Convertino after spending time in such bands as Giant Sand and the Friends of Dean Martinez. On albums like Hot Rail (2000) and Garden Ruin (2006), Calexico creates a spirited, brassy and wholly cinematic blend of country, folk, rock and mariachi. Considering that the band’s next album, Carried to Dust, won’t be out until September, this is a fine occasion for devotees and neophytes alike to catch up.—Jason Anderson
