Born Ruffians

This young Toronto trio took part in a time-honoured Canadian tradition: getting attention at home by earning some buzz overseas first. High school pals from Midland now barely out of their teens, Born Ruffians were signed by two cool labels (XL in the U.K., Warp in the U.S.) after getting a demo to the right folks. A subsequent EP and some U.K. shows cemented their next-big-thing status. It’s not just empty hype; there’s much to love about the jangly, melodic pop songs on Red, Yellow & Blue (2008), Born Ruffians’ sparkling debut disc. Onstage, singer-guitarist Luke Lalonde is a giddy bundle of nervous energy. Supporting slots by Montreal dream-pop group Miracle Fortress and local electro-billy wonder Slim Twig make this a strong showcase of precociously talented Canucks.—Jason Anderson
