The Senegalese star remains a fearsome live performer more than two decades after his late-’80s international breakthrough. Maal has continued to find new ways of combining the music of West Africa with strains of jazz, funk, blues and hip hop. The most recent fruits of his cross-pollination can be heard on Television (2009), an invigorating collection made with the equally adventurous New York trio Brazilian Girls.—Jason Anderson
