Autechre

If no longer as inscrutable as they seemed when their angular and abstract brand of electronica first emerged in the early ’90s, Autechre partners Sean Booth and Rob Brown have continued to preserve a sense of mystery around what they do. Jet-set lifestyles and crowd-pleasing anthems are not for this duo from Rochdale, U.K. Autechre’s ninth album since 1993, Quaristice (2008) is another collection of darkly hued, curiously propulsive compositions that have the mathematical complexity and strange beauty of Mandelbrot sets. Performed live, the tracks are thunderous enough to leave listeners feeling bruised. The sensation is not exactly pleasurable, but Autechre’s music retains a strong allure.— Jason Anderson
