Arctic Monkeys

The most hyped British act of 2006 is well poised to beat the sophomore slump. A stroppy quartet of boys from Sheffield who are just escaping their teens, the Arctic Monkeys followed up its debut disc—Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not (2006), one of the fastest-selling albums in U.K. chart history—with a record that makes good on its predecessor’s snarky sense of promise. Featuring an array of dance floor–ready crowd-pleasers (“Teddy Picker”), melodic pop-rockers (“Fluorescent Adolescent”) and quieter, sparer numbers (“Only Ones Who Know”), Favourite Worst Nightmare (2007) is a strikingly confident collection that sees the band step further away from such influences as The Jam, The Libertines and Franz Ferdinand, and head toward its own terrain. And with his witty tales of teenage carousing and stilted romance, singer-guitarist Alex Turner is emerging as one of his generation’s key songwriters.—Jason Anderson
