Alex Cuba

His country of origin may have provided Alexis Puentes with a handy stage name, but he’s hardly a straight-up traditionalist. Since immigrating to Canada in 1999, Cuba has worked hard to develop his signature combination of funk, rock, soul and Latin rhythms; he also co-wrote much of Nelly Furtado’s recent Spanish-language disc Mi Plan. As a result, he’s been rewarded with two Juno Awards in the world music category and a growing number of admirers.—Jason Anderson
