Alanis Morissette probably wishes she didn’t need a romantic catastrophe to write her best work, but so be it. Recorded after she split with her actor fiancé Ryan Reynolds—who took up with Scarlett Johansson—Morissette’s Flavors of Entanglement (2008) documents her feelings of betrayal and attempts to soothe her new heartache. As on her breakthrough breakup album, Jagged Little Pill (1995), she sounds re-energized, though this time her emotional frankness is paired not with grungy guitars, but with polished electro-pop, provided by producer Guy Sigsworth.—Jason Anderson
