AC/DC

Absence does make the heart grow fonder, even when it comes to these grimy Aussie rockers. On hiatus for much of this decade, AC/DC roared back into action last fall with the much-hyped release of Black Ice (2008), the band’s first studio album in eight years (and 15th in the three decades since it lurched out of Australia like some kind of primordial beast). Such new songs as “Rock ’n’ Roll Train” and “Smash ’n’ Grab” prove that subtlety will never be AC/DC’s strong suit, but no other rock band wields its guitar riffs with the same pulverizing, invigorating effect.—Jason Anderson
