Rainer Werner Fassbinder made Berlin Alexanderplatz at the height of his fame—before Lola, after The Marriage of Maria Braun. But it didn’t sit well with the German TV audience for which it was made, and the 15-hour miniseries that is now considered one of Fassbinder’s masterpieces fell from view. Almost 30 years later, the tale of an ex-con trying to go good in Weimar Germany has been remastered and released here in three bite-size parts. Dec. 12 to 14. Also screening: David Lean’s WWII epic, The Bridge on the River Kwai, Dec. 6; the last six films in Cinematheque’s Nagisa Oshima retrospective, including the gay samurai flick, Gohatto, Dec. 6; and more selections from 40 years of the Directors’ Fortnight series at Cannes, including Canadian master Denys Arcand’s Réjeanne Padovani, Dec. 2, and Robert Bresson’s Le Diable Probablement, Dec. 3.—Hadley Dyer
