Few musicians have had the impact Wayne Shorter has on jazz, a feat made all the more remarkable by the fact that he spent much of his career without officially assuming leadership of a band. In the early 1960s, he acted as music director and saxophonist for the most accomplished editions of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, then went on to act as musical director for Miles Davis’s Second Great Quintet before gaining his greatest fame as co-leader, with Joe Zawinul, of the fusion favourite Weather Report. When Shorter finally assumed leadership of a working, touring band almost a decade ago, he also returned to the free-flowing, improvisational style he had practised to such brilliant effect in the 1960s. Inspired as well as accompanied by pianist Danilo Pérez, bassist John Patitucci and drummer Brian Blade, Shorter is playing at a level of consistent creativity, generating excitement that’s rare in any idiom.—Stuart Broomer
