This Annex spot programs music from the creative fringes, including appearances by Drumheller, which launches its third CD, Glint, and is prepping for a show at Vancouver’s Cultural Olympiad. There’s something very special about Drumheller, a quintet that plays compositions written in a style defined by Charles Mingus and Ornette Coleman, but which hums with a modern vitality. Perhaps it’s in the members’ contrasting approaches: trombonist Doug Tielli and guitarist Eric Chenaux are more frankly experimental, saxophonist Brodie West is an intense advocate of free jazz, and bassist Rob Clutton and drummer Nick Fraser bring verve and polish to the group’s every transaction.—Stuart Broomer
