Now in its 24th year, Toronto’s main jazz festival covers much of the musical spectrum and much of the city, from concert venues and public spaces to neighbourhood bars and restaurants. Headliners pianist Keith Jarrett, drummer Jack DeJohnette and bassist Gary Peacock have been working together since 1983, setting a contemporary standard for the piano trio with their close interaction and intense sense of swing. June 30. $47.50–$127.50. Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts, 145 Queen St. W. Funk master Maceo Parker kicks off the ticketed evening shows at Nathan Phillips Square on June 25, while Herbie Hancock brings his River of Possibilities tour on June 26. $35 and $55, respectively. There are a pair of promising double-bills of roots musicians: the British singer-songwriter James Hunter and Taj Mahal and the Trio, a pillar of the blues for the past 40-odd years, June 27, $35; and New Orleans R&B great Allen Toussaint and gospel singer Mavis Staples, June 30, $45. The free daytime shows offer up some interesting musicians, including saxophonist Christine Jensen’s Jazz Orchestra on June 28, and Nimmons ‘n’ Nine Now, June 30. Nathan Phillips Square, 100 Queen St. W. Nikki Yanofsky, now best known as the voice of the Olympic song “I Believe,” shows off some retro jazz style, June 25. $35–$55. David Sanborn has garnered six Grammys while developing his trademark funk alto saxophone sound, June 27. $40–$55. Koerner Hall, The Royal Conservatory, 273 Bloor St. W., 416-408-0208, rcmusic.ca.
