Celebrating the blues in its many forms, this is the 22nd edition of the Revue; it’s a tribute to the diverse genre’s durability that each year includes new singers. Hailing from rural Saskatchewan, Little Miss Higgins sings with a youthful clarity, but her material is rooted in the Deep South of the 1920s, and her repertoire and guitar style are drawn from the work of elders Memphis Minnie and Big Bill Broonzy. An ex-member of the Nathaniel Dett Chorale, Alana Bridgewater possesses a voice that is both big and precise, ideally suited to bringing out the gospel roots in rhythm and blues, while Elizabeth Shepherd’s expressive jazz vocals are steeped in emotional nuance. Singer and guitarist Suzie Vinnick acts as musical director, leading a band that includes bassist Brandi Disterheft and saxophonists Carrie Chesnutt and Colleen Allen.—Stuart Broomer
