Toronto has a long history of tucked-away venues devoted to audacious music, from 1960s coffee houses such as the Bohemian Embassy and the Cellar to the many incarnations of the Music Gallery over the past four decades. More recently, the radical fringe of Toronto’s improvised music scene has found performance opportunities at Tranzac, Arraymusic Studio and the NOW Lounge. The studio space Somewhere There, operated by trombonist Scott Thomson, has joined the fray, presenting improvised music on a regular basis with musicians-in-residence presenting weekly performances for a two-month period. Throughout July, composer Allison Cameron, who frequently works with small, amplified objects, leads a new ensemble on Wednesdays (July 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30). On Thursdays (July 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31), tenor saxophonist Paul Newman presents his band Open House, which features alto saxophonist Evan Shaw, trombonist Thomson, bassist Michael Herring and drummer Dave Fish. It’s an adventure in sometimes raw, but almost always fresh music making. — Stuart Broomer
