Trumpeter Roy Hargrove continues to amass triumphant appearances at Massey Hall, building on 2001’s Directions in Music—an all-star tribute to Miles Davis and John Coltrane, with Herbie Hancock and Michael Brecker—and 2003’s 50th anniversary celebration of Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie’s legendary Massey Hall concert. Hargrove is often called upon to summon past giants, and it’s easy to see why: he’s a consummate performer of the bop inheritance—fiery, precise and inventive. Opening for Hargrove is The Bad Plus, a radical revaluation of the piano trio that combines jazz minimalism, amplification and occasional forays into heavy metal. Anchored by Reid Anderson on bass, performances are often highlighted by the brilliant rhythmic dialogues of pianist Ethan Iverson and drummer David King.—Stewart Broomer
