The Rex

Trumpeter Brad Goode is an inventive musician whose Chicago background led to collaborations with such greats as Eddie Harris and Curtis Fuller. He’s playing here with an all-star Toronto group that includes saxophonist Mike Murley and guitarist Lorne Lofsky, March 11 and 12. Brooklyn-based guitarist Mike Baggetta plays in a linear, melodic style that suggests roots in the work of Jim Hall, but he’s developing his own voice and is clearly at home as the head of this quartet, March 18. Currently director of jazz studies at the University of Connecticut, Winnipeg native Earl MacDonald served as music director and pianist in the Maynard Ferguson Big Bop Nouveau Band. That big-band experience transferred neatly to MacDonald’s writing for sextet, here explored with a band consisting largely of associates from McGill: trombonist Jules Estrin, trumpeter Brian O’Kane, saxophonist Kelly Jefferson, drummer Joel Haynes and bassist Mike Downes, March 25 and 26.—Stuart Broomer
