A few blocks from Nathan Phillips Square, the Rex is a key part of the Downtown Jazz Festival. This year, New York’s Abbasi/Tarry Trio matches the coiling electric strings of guitarist Rez Abbasi and bassist Chris Tarry with drummer Jordan Perlson, June 24. Andrew Downing’s Arts and Letters octet mixes jazz and classical influences with the aid of trumpeter Kevin Turcotte, violinist Aleksander Gajic and singer Patricia O’Callaghan, June 27.—David Balzer
