Tenor saxophonist and composer Andy Ballantyne’s Large Ensemble is an 11-piece band that makes effective use of clarinets, flutes, flugelhorns and mutes, producing a stunning range of textures with fewer members than a traditional big band. ABLE balances that orchestral depth with a host of excellent improvisers, including saxophonists Tara Davidson and Kelly Jefferson, trumpeters Jason Logue and Kevin Turcotte, and trombonist William Carn. Oct. 4. A Tribute to Lee Konitz/Warne Marsh pays homage to the two brilliant saxophonists who first gave form to the vision of pianist Lennie Tristano, fusing the exploratory harmony of bop with long, flowing lines and light sounds that ushered in cool jazz. Tenor saxophonist Trevor Hogg and alto saxophonist Tara Davidson tackle such compositions as Konitz’s “Palo Alto ” and Marsh’s “Marshmallow” with pianist David Braid, bassist Steve Wallace and drummer Nick Fraser. Oct. 18. Goo is a thoughtful combination of Danish and Canadian musicians who have called Copenhagen home. The style may be free-jazz, but the content covers a wide swath, from cool-toned abstraction to comic imitations of ancient dance bands, with fluttering sound effects and manic stride piano courtesy of Simon Toldam Rosengren. Alto saxophonist Brodie West, bassist Graig Earle and drummer Kevin Brow complete the quartet. Oct. 22 and 23.—Stuart Broomer
