Canada’s premier jazz fusion group of the ’90s, Metalwood, appears in its original form with Toronto saxophonist Mike Murley, Vancouver’s Brad Turner on trumpet and electronic keyboards, and New York’s Ian Froman on drums and Chris Tarry on bass. June 12 and 13. As part of the TD Canada Trust Toronto Jazz Festival, the Rex expands its already full roster with after-hours performances. The Saxophone Summit series features a wealth of talent, both domestic and imported. Among the highlights is Pat LaBarbera and his brother, drummer Joe LaBarbera, June 19; New York altoist David Binney pairs with brilliant keyboard player Craig Taborn, June 20 and 21; while tenorist Donny McCaslin, another member of the New York Downtown school, brings drummer Johnathan Blake, June 26 and 28. One of the fest’s most lyrical bands is Nordic Connect: Swedish keyboardist Maggi Olin, Christine Jensen on alto saxophone, and Ingrid Jensen on trumpet. June 24. Also appearing: Jim Galloway’s Tribute to Johnny Hodges, June 8; saxophonist Seamus Blake, June 25; Mike Murley, Tara Davidson and David Braid in D.M.B.Q., June 27; Joel Frahm with Melissa Stylianou, June 28; and Barry Romberg’s Random Access Large Ensemble, June 29. — Stuart Broomer
